The Whole Path, in One Paragraph

That is the whole path from “what is a staff engineer” through your first year in the role, assembled from nine sources that each had part of it.

No single source covers it end to end. Reilly has the operating model but not the promotion mechanics. Larson has the promotion mechanics from interviews but not the week-to-week habits. GitLab has the company rule and the task list but no view on whether you should still write code. Ewerlöf has the anti-patterns. Hands-on Architects have the calendar and the templates. Sonmez and Brown have the coach’s view. Muldoon and Najim have the part written after coding agents arrived.

The value is in the combination. Every lesson in this guide pulls from two or three of them, and if a lesson did not produce something no single source has, it was cut.

IF YOU DO ONE THING

Send the empty promotion packet from lesson 3.1 to your manager this week, then spend one hour filling it in. The sections you cannot fill are your plan for the next two quarters.

The Sources, One More Time

Every one of these is worth reading in full. This guide combines them; it does not replace them.
